Tag 202, 28.10.2013 – Von Myawaddy bis Tak

km 184167

Day 202, 28 October 2013 – From Myawaddy to Tak

km 184167

Today is Olivia’s birthday. Interesting fact: since the Myanmar Transit took longer than expected she can celebrate her birthday in two different countries. The departure from Myanmar is very easy and the entrance into Thailand is not much more difficult. Within an hour everything is stamped – even the carnets, although Thailand is a non-carnet-land – and we are in. Unfortunately, we only get a 15-day visa, which is a bit too short. So Laos is next on our list. In Tak, we spot a nice resort where we celebrate Olivia’s birthday until the early morning hours.

Tag 203, 29.10.2013 – Von Tak bis Sukothai

km 184252

Day 203, 29 October 2013 – From Tak to Sukothai

km 184252

So today is the day of separation: The last few days with Olivier, Olivia, Helena and Pavel were really unique. Since we are all driving around Southeast Asia during the next four months, we are sure that our paths will cross sooner or later. Nevertheless, we will miss them until then! With Willi on board and Detlef back on his motorcycle we go to Sukothai. We visit the ancient temple ruins that are causing us a great start in Thailand. Now we can finally see the sights which are "off the beaten path" and which we did not visit during our recent stays in Thailand. Detlef finds another beautiful resort with big parking for the night right in the city centre. The two even allow us to use their shower. We could almost get used to this luxurious way of living!

Tag 204, 30.10.2013 – Von Sukothai bis Si Bun Raeng

km 184356

Today we finally arrive at Willi’s friends’ place. Lung-In, Prawan and their grandson Em-Em were already desperately waiting for us. Immediately, we are offered a beer and then we can take a seat at the table: ‘Nin’ fish, veggies, Tom Yum Gung (spicy soup with lemongrass and prawns), steamed rice and sticky rice. The food is simply amazing and we are really happy that we now have a place where we can stay for the next few days.

Tag 205, 31.10.2013 – Si Bun Raeng

km 184724

Day 205, 31 October 2013 – Si Bun Raeng

km 184724

Before Prawan and I go to the market we get a treatment at the hairdressers’: hair wash, head massage, face masks, blow dry, and styling costs for the two of us less than €5. At the market, we buy lettuce, Nin-fish, prawns and vegetables. The market ladies find Prawan’s farang (Thai word for ‘foreign’) friend very funny and I'm quickly the centre of attention in the female-dominated hall. They explain and demonstrate everything to me. Well, if I understand it correctly with my rudimentary Thai knowledge – it is mostly about food.

Today, we are having Tom Yum Nin, prawns in garlic, two kinds of rice, vegetables and papaya. Prawan is really spoiling us!

Tag 206, 1.11.2013 – Si Bun Raeng

km 184724

Tag 206, 1 November 2013 – Si Bun Raeng

km 184724

David tried with At, Lung-In and Prawan’s son to repair the broken shift linkage. The two put small pieces of beer cans between the broken parts to fix them. Although it is not 100% back to normal, it now only makes those awful noises every fifth time David changes the gear. Then we drive with At to the school, in which Lung-In is the headmaster. He asks us to tell the children of our trip. They are very interested and look at us with their mouths open - "what are these two farangs doing in our school and what the hell are they talking about" is probably what goes on in their heads since they hardly speak any English. Nevertheless, we feel honoured that we were able to take a look behind the scenes.

After our lunch with At David, Detlef and I visit At’s farm. He cultivates sugar cane and rice, but since a few years also grows trees which are used in the paper production. The business is fairly lucrative, says At, mainly because he enjoys what he is doing. He also seems not to be disturbed that he does not get rich by it.

In the evening we all eat out together. Lung-In tells the cook what he wants and we are amazed: Tom Yum Gung, Tom Yum Nin, Nin baked fish, lots of different kinds of vegetables, rice, and so on. Slowly we should take better care of our figure.

Tag 207, 2.11.2013 – Si Bun Raeng

km 184724

Day 207, 2 November 2013 – Si Bun Raeng

km 184724

Today is our last day with Detlef and Willi. We drive to the White Buddha, which is about an one-and-a-half-hour drive from Si Bun Raeng, located high above a lake. The steps to the top are cumbersome, but apparently one gets rid of all sins when you walk up. Atop, we are presented with a beautiful Buddha and a wonderful view of the lake.

We continue to the large dam where we eat delicious fish. The waitress is laughing at our pronunciation but apparently she seems to understand what we want!

Tag 208, 3.11.2013 – Von Si Bun Raeng bis Rom Klao

km 184724

Day 208, 3 November 2013 – From Si Bun Raeng to Rom Klao

km 184724

So today we’re leaving for Chiang Mai. In order not to have to drive the same route back we decide on the jungle passage. In contrast to India, Thailand seems to know how to build proper roads, so we can enjoy the scenery without worries.

In the evening we find a beautiful place with a great view. As soon as we park the car three pretty girls approach us on their moped. They apologise profusely to disturb us but they think that the parking space is not very safe. At the nearby botanical gardens we can easily park for the night. We cannot resist such beautiful smiles and follow them. We did not expect what awaits us here: a beautiful campsite with showers and toilets! The three walk up with us to the lookout point where we can enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Tag 209, 4.11.2013 – Von Rom Klao bis Ban Thug Laeng

km 185000

Day 209, 4 November 2013 – From Rom Klao to Ban Thug Laeng

km 185000

At exactly 8 o’clock we go to the Visitor's Centre of Rom Klao Botanical Garden's. Gig and Om, two of the three girls who brought us here yesterday, lead us through the greenhouse, the plant nursery and outdoor area. We are shown the most beautiful and rare orchids and we are blown away by the beautiful showroom!

Later that day we visit Si Satchanalai Historical Park, which hosts ruins similar to the ones in Sukothai.

In Ban Thug Laeng we stop for the day.

Tag 210, 5.11.2013 – Von Ban Thug Laeng bis Mae On

km 185324

Day 210, 5 November 2013 – From Ban Thug Laeng to Mae On

km 185324

We want to find the climbing area where we climbed with Samy and Spötti four years ago. It seems that we are constantly driving around the mountain but never get really close to it. In a café, we google the exact location and then finally find it.

The spot has not changed much, except that, despite the off-season, there are loads and loads of people. We explore the terrain and find routes that we have not seen four years ago. In the evening it is getting really quiet. The last climbers also leave. We get to know Ingrid and Christian from Germany, who are experienced climbers and travelers. They recommend us to do a side trip to Laos, where there are also some great spots.

Tag 211, 6.11.2013 – Mae On

km 185482

Was nun?

Day 211, 6 November 2012 – Mae On

km 185482

Although our muscles are really sore we cannot resist the call of the crag. We make the mistake of starting with two far too difficult routes. When we get to the easier ones, we are almost exhausted. There, we also see Ingrid and Christian again. During the lunch break in front of the bus, the two sit down with us and tell us about their fate: A few years ago they were climbing in Laos and Thailand. Their bungalow complex in Laos caught fire on New Year's Eve and burned their climbing equipment. Luckily, the rest of her luggage was in another bungalow, which is why they still had their clothes. The money also burned and since their credit card was stolen a few days earlier they only owned what they had in their pockets. Without a credit card or cash you cannot book a flight that would take them back to Bangkok. With the remaining money they could buy 2 train tickets to Thailand. But: The train arrived in Thailand's capital five hours before their flight back to Germany. Should actually work. Well, the train was 6 hours late, the plane was already in the air. What to do now? For booking a new flight you need one of the following two things: (a) a credit card or (b) cash. Quick phone calls to Germany so that the loved ones at home can transfer € 2,000 via Western Union. Then they were finally able to leave Southeast Asia!

The two also tell us about a cave where you can also climb. We find it in the afternoon and are overwhelmed by the routes. Too bad that we have to go to Chiang Mai tomorrow to extend our visas!

Tag 212, 7.11.2013 – Von Mae On nach Chiang Mai

km 185482

Was nun?

Day 212, 7 November 2013 – From Mae On to Chiang Mai

km 185482

In the late morning we leave and make our way to the immigration office in Chiang Mai. 10 km before we enter the city, a white man in a car signals us to stop, so we pull over. "Hi, I 'm Kees from Holland. We drove our Unimog to Thailand in 2006 and have now built a house here. Would you like to visit us?" Of course! We agree immediately. First, however, we still need to go to Chiang Mai.

In the immigration office, we are told that we can extend the visa for 7 days only. This would cost us €100 for both of us. So we decide to go to Laos in order to apply for a 60-day Thai visa in Vientiane.

We want to buy a Thai sim card, so we can call Kees and Els. Unfortunately, David's cell phone is not unlocked. Back at the bus we put the sim into my old Nokia, which works immediately. However, I must have written down a wrong number, which is why it does not work. Luckily, Kees also gave us his GPS coordinates, so we can go there tomorrow.

What to do with the rest of the day? We are hungry, so we go out for dinner: we are having Shabu Shabu, a Japanese soup fondue, and sushi. Yummy!! In the evening we drive to Chiang Mai Zoo. Unfortunately, the road leading to the "campsite" (we assume it to be a resting are) is closed by the police. We are asked to inquire at the nearby Tourist Police for help. They immediately offer us that we should sleep on their parking lot. They also have a hot shower. We would not have expected this today!

Tag 213, 8.11.2013 – Von Chiang Mai zu Kees und Els

km 185528

Tag 213, 8 November 2013 – From Chiang Mai to Kees and Els

km 185528

First of all we need to sign in the guest book of the Tourist Police. Then a little photo shooting takes place. At 8:30 a.m. we are finally allowed to set off to the nearby zoo. There we spend most of the day and see animals that we have until now never seen live: white tigers, lions, panthers, leopards, pandas, and so on.

In the late afternoon we follow the GPS data direction to Kees and Els. We stop before a gate with a long driveway that leads to a magnificent villa surrounded by a beautiful garden and rice fields. We then dare to go through the gate toward the house. We can already see Kees, so this is really the right place.

The two have created a real paradise: a fantastic, top-kept garden with a pond, a beautiful house, which has a lot of style and a large terrace with swimming pool. We are completely blown away.

Tag 214, 9.11.2013 – Kees und Els

km 185563

Day 214, 9 November 2013 – Kees und Els

km 185563

Kees and Els are really spoiling us. The guest room, in which we slept like king and queen, has an en suite bathroom. Also, I am allowed to use the washing machine, which is like winning in the lottery :)

The two tell us about their journey in their Unimog, nicknamed "Trotter Moggy," which they have sold in Thailand. Within 14 months, they went from Eindhoven in the Netherlands to Thailand and have found this beautiful piece of land. Then one thing led to another and now they have realised their dream - and a very stylish indeed! Their sweet doggy Akki (oh dear, I hope I write his name correctly) likes it here very well.

In the evening we go to one of their favorite places where we order way too much food. No problem - what's left comes into bags that we can take home with us. Back at Kees and Els' place the two have a surprise for us: we let go a large paper lantern - including small fireworks!

Tag 215, 10.11.2013 – Von Kees und Els zum Goldenen Dreieck

km 185563

Tag 215, 10 November 2013 – From Kees and Els to the Golden Triangle

km 185563

Our route to Laos leads us through Chiang Rai and then right to the Golden Triangle. There we see a sign that takes us to the "Hall of Opium." Interested, we drive to the new building, located in a beautiful park, and ask in the lobby what is actually going to await us inside: A museum that tells the story of opium. However, it is not just a small exhibition, but an ingeniously built and well-equipped building that leads right through a mountain. We learn all about the production, processing and use of opium, about the role of the British, French and Chinese in the Opium Wars, political implications and historical contexts.

In the evening we ask an employee whether there is a campsite somewhere nearby. She offers us at once that we must spend the night in the area of the Hall of Opium. As a last supper in Thailand – well, for now at least – we are having yesterday's leftovers which would almost be enough for a third eater.

Tag 216, 11.11.2013 – Vom Goldenen Dreieck bis Pha Oudom (Laos)

km 185885

Day 216, 11 November 2013 – From the Golden Triangle to Pha Oudom (Laos)

km 185885

The Golden Triangle is really nice to look at. Hard to believe that one country (Thailand) is only separated by a river from two other countries (Myanmar and Laos). The departure from Thailand is proceeded very quickly. Within 10 minutes our passports and carnets are stamped and a ferry ticket across the Mekong is bought for incredible €25 (way too expensive - we are sure of that).
