Day 321, 24 February 2014 – From Bangkok to Cha-am

km 190419

Fully motivated we are driving to the Austrian Embassy in the morning because with a little luck David’s passport is in the bags of the diplomatic courier, who is arriving today. However, we were unlucky, but at least we don't have to wait for another week since Samy can pick up the passport when he is flying home to Austria in less than two weeks.

Unfortunately, we are only able to pick up our passports at the Mongolian Embassy by 4 p.m.. Since this would mean waiting in the city for seven hours, we return to Penpark Place, where we chat with Kari and Ulla. Shortly before 3:30 we are back at the Mongolian Embassy. The Ambassador's small daughter is entertaining us during the short waiting time.

At 5:30 we are back at Penpark Place because the mob has become so widely spread that only one of the six intersections that we can use to get to our guesthouse is open. The final e-mail check before we leave is also quite positive: We are told that we do not need to pay a security deposit for our cars at the Chinese border (our agent's suggestion was $4,000 per car) and the scooter is also no problem.

Today we drive until 9:30 and find a quiet gas station next to the road bringing us to the south.

Tag 322, 25.2.2014 – Von Cha-am nach Ban Krut

km 190578

Day 322, 25 February 2014 – From Cha-am to Ban Krut

km 190578

Today we start early in order to avoid midday heat. In the late morning we finally find what we have been looking for: Wolfi and Verena! The two Corinthians are travelling Asia with their cute dog Apollo in their Mercedes truck called Amigo. They are now on the road since almost three year. Furthermore, they were one of the first overland travellers, whose website we have been following from the beginning. Thanks to them we were able to avoid some mistakes and have often discovered places that we would not have found otherwise. Thus, it is very pleasant to finally meet them in person.

They currently have two visitors, Mike and Brigitte from Erding/Germany, who are normally riding their truck Hannibal when they are going on holiday. Before getting the truck, they also had a VW LT and know about Bluffis's weaknesses. Still, Mike is surprised that this car managed to bring us to Thailand.

In the evening we all go to Li's Restaurant where we eat a delicious fish and coconut soup, fried chili fish and crab rice and as a desert we are having marvellous iced Strawberry Daquiris. The four tell us all about the big adventures they had on their trips and we learn that there is still a lot to which we can look forward to on our next trips :)

Tag 323, 26.2.2014 – Ban Krut

km 190782

Day 323, 26 February 2014 – Ban Krut

km 190782

Wolfi and Verena invite us to have barbecue with them, Brigitte, and Mike. David and I go to Tesco to get what we need: fish, chicken, mushrooms, baby corn, asparagus, salad, beer, and Sam Son Rum. The result is really delicious. Especially Apollo is delighted that we are having fish because he knows that the heads are all for him :)

Tag 324, 27.2.2014 – Ban Krut

km 190782

Day 324, 27 February 2014 – Ban Krut

km 190782

Today is market day in Ban Krut, but since we don't need anything we stay at home and Wolfi and Verena can leave Apollo with us. As he is excellently trained and instantly obeys every command we almost do not notice him. In addition, he dozes very happily in the shade and nothing can affect his Feng Shui. I get out my snorkelling mask and find some treasures that I give to Brigitte.

Towards the evening a Thai camper arrives, whom Verena and Wolfi already know. Anand has converted his Suzuki into a camper. The interior includes a ceramic toilet, a shower, and his sleeping place. The rest – like water, cooking equipment, the cooker and his chair – are attached to the outside. During the last three weeks he was driving from his hometown Bangkok down to Chumphon and is now on his way back.

Tag 325, 28.2.2014 – Ban Krut

km 190782

Day 325, 28 February 2014 – Ban Krut

km 190782

Anand departs early in the morning as his vacation is almost over. He must return to Bangkok. In the late morning we get a visit from a motorbike driver from Cologne, who had his motorcycle flew to Southeast Asia, where he will complete a special mission: He interviews all kinds of people who are travelling since more than one year and asks the question of how consciousness changes during travel. The result is going to be a movie. Wolfi and Verena are on his list because he already knows them from the internet. Although the interview should only take one hour, they are filmed for more than three hours.

In the afternoon a German comes who asks us how long we want to stay on this land. His girlfriend is the cousin of the owner of the property and she was of the opinion that our stay was long enough. Verena looks at him a bit puzzled, because on the first day she has spared no effort to find the landowner or at least some relative and the other cousin immediately allowed her to stay as long as they want. Anyway, as we all will be leaving tomorrow, it doesn't really matter.

Tag 326, 1.3.2014 – Von Ban Krut nach Lam Thap

km 190782

Tag 326, 1 March 2014 – From Ban Krut to Lam Thap

km 190782

In the morning we unfortunately have to say goodbye to Wolfi and Verena. We really would have liked to stay with them in beautiful Ban Krut a little bit longer, but they also must move on as they are running out of visa. While they go north, we go south. Only 420km separate us from Lam Thap, where Minty lives, and due to the excellent highways we arrive there in the afternoon. We even get to know her mum Yula and her dad Warun. Then, we visit the shop owned by the Kanjanaprayoons (Minty's family) and go to the Weekend Market, which is right next to the shop.

Tag 327, 2.3.2014 – Lam Thap

km 191206

Day 327, 2 March 2014 – Lam Thap

km 191206

Early in the morning I get a shock: My computer reports "no bootable device found," which means that it does not recognize the hard drive. I grab Samy's tablet and google some forums to find out what the reason for this could be. Already the first key combination redeems me from the tension. My baby is working again! Since today is Sunday, the computer shops are closed and so I have to wait until tomorrow to finally buy an external hard drive and save all my data.

Today, Samy and David start full of energy and motivation in the day. Unfortunately, the installation of the new 4x4 gearbox is a bit tricky and so they need almost 5 hours until it is attached (the reason is that the gearbox is a bit different than that which we have inside). In the evening I cook spaghetti with tomato and prawn sauce and salad to give Minty an impression of the typical Austrian cuisine.

Tag 328, 3.3.2014 – Lam Thap

km 191206

Yummy!

Day 328, 3 March 2014 – Lam Thap

km 191206

While the guys take care of Bluffi (there is much to do: adjust the new gearbox, change the oil, check the spark plugs, change the oil ring on the main gearbox, reposition the tires, and and and) I fully dedicate myself to my housewifely duties: doing the laundry, buying an external hard drive and getting spare parts (screws and stuff).

In the late afternoon - as it finally cools down a little – Minty shows us the big market. We are overwhelmed by the variety of food. Quite exotic are: fresh frogs, squirrels, eels, fresh maggots and trilobites. But Minty buys shrimp, squid, fish and vegetables, which is definitely okay of us.

We are having a great barbecue. Some of Minty's relatives are joining in and she serves us a magnificent Tom Yam Gung. Furthermore, we are also having grilled fish, squid, rice and vegetables. Yummy!

Tag 329, 4.3.2014 – Lam Thap

km 191206

Alles. Ich bin kurz vorm Platzen.

Day 329, 4 March 2014 – Lam Thap

km 191206

Today is Samy's and our last day in Lam Thap, so we make a small tour. Minty first shows us the house where her grandmother used to live, and then the house in which she and Patty grew up. The houses are in the middle of their palm oil plantation, which is their main source of income next to the shop. They also used to own a fishing pond, but it was given to the community.

In the evening we are having a little party. Sabai, Minty's cousin, came with his daughter from Krabi just to see us. He brings a large box filled with 5kg of fresh fish and 4kg of shells. Yula also brings a big box of shrimps and squids, as well as kilos of fresh fruits and veggies. Only now we slowly realise how big the feast is going to be. While Samy, David and Sabai are the grill-masters, the women take care of the side dishes. The other men talk about politics. I feel somewhat out of place because as hardly anyone is able to speak English (or, rather, they are to shy to talk in English) it often takes longer to explain to me what I should do than if they would do it themselves. So I take care of the 'hardware': I put mats on the floor and lay plates and cutlery ready. More and more people come and the feast can begin.

I sit down with the women, who are constantly giving me food. When they offer me a meat dish I take a small piece (I'm not a big meat eater and the last few months I lived more or less vegetarian), because I do not want to be rude. Minty sees me and looks over to me in horror. She shows me a photo of the animal that I have just eaten: a squirrel. Honestly, it was really good, but horribly hot! The flavour of the coconut soup is very good, but somehow the little white beads, which swim in the soup, pop in my mouth, which is a bit unpleasant. I am rather confused and look closer. Only then I understand: ant eggs. Mh... not really my kind of thing, that popping, but the taste is excellent.

I stick to safe shores: Steamed fish in lemon sauce, grilled fish, mussels in chili sauce, vegetables and rice. For more than two hours we are constantly laughing, talking and eating. The women are all trying very hard to ensure that I understand everything and I'm starting to do that, too. When I cannot eat anything anymore because I'm almost bursting the desserts are served: coconut cake, peanut brittle, sticky rice with mango (a dish for which I could die) and much more. I have to try anything. Everything. I'm ready to burst.

Tag 330, 5.3.2014 – Von Lam Thap nach Koh Lanta

km 191244

Day 330, 5 March 2014 – From Lam Thap to Koh Lanta

km 191244

We say goodbye to Lam Thap. Samy and Minty are flying to Bangkok today, because Samy has his return flight to Austria in 2 days. We only have to drive 70 km to Koh Lanta. However, at the ferry the first discussion arises because the rude lady at the counter wants us to pay 343 Baht since we are a truck. I call Samy, who passes the phone over to Sabai and in turn I hand the phone over to the lady. She then explains to him that we are much too heavy, but actually the minibus full of tourists weighs more than our car. As the discussion grows fruitless I smile at her, say a mean word to her in German and pay the money.

We drive to southern tip of Koh Lanta. There, we find a beautiful spot close to a bar, where we are having a cold beer. We then ask the bar owner if it is okay to park at the vacant spot and he even allows us to use his shower and toilet. We also learn that we are not the first overlanders who are parked here. However, when we pay for the drinks we have to take a deep breath: 140 Baht (€3.20) for a beer out of a bottle in a wooden shack is far too much! Normally, you pay 53 Baht at 7-Eleven or 100 Baht in an expensive restaurant. Well, it seems that paradise doesn't come cheap!
